Architecturally speaking, Atlanta is on the wrong side of history.  Due to a few unfortunate fires including one as recently as 99 years ago the city of Atlanta has been more in the rebuilding process rather than in the restoration business.  Despite the age of a majority of our buildings, Atlanta is known globally for its rich history.   From when the Zero Mile Post was driven into the ground in 1837 Atlanta has been a thriving capital city. It played pinnacle roles in both the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement 100 years later.  Atlanta is home to global corporations that have GDPs larger than some mid-sized countries, such as Coca-Cola, Turner Broadcasting and Delta Airlines.  It is also home to the busiest airport in the world.  With such a rich and dynamic history, such a vibrant present and a great outlook for the future, there’s no better place than right here in Atlanta, Georgia.  Of course, when we were asked to put our small stamp on Atlanta history, we jumped at the chance.

There’s no company more important to Atlanta than Coca-Cola.  To be able to work on any historical property is special, but one previously owned by Coca-Cola magnate Asa Candler is like working on a museum relic.  Candler’s Druid Hills mansion that was built in 1916 with inspiration from Pompeii is now St. John Chrysostom Melkite Catholic Church.  They decided to renovate the windows in their place of worship with several goals in mind including; security, energy efficiency, comfort, low-maintenance, and maintaining the beautiful aesthetics and historical architecture.

Just like homeowners, the leaders of the Church gathered quotes from several companies in Metro Atlanta to see who could best meet their needs.  Since the church still had many of the original windows from 1916 a company with expertise in restoration as well as renovation was vital.  In the end, they chose North Georgia Replacement Windows.

Historical Atlanta

The Challenges

Curved Windows

Some of the original, historical windows were curved.  The reason NG Windows was chosen was because of the technical expertise that we provided.  We were, in fact, the only company out of the ones interviewed who could provide the curved windows that were required of this job.  These windows are very unique requiring a custom mill work shop to make curved frames and we brought in specialty curved glass that was manufactured for us in Arkansas.  It was a lot of detailed work and coordination with both companies regarding sizes, angles, logistics and more.

Security

Custom Doors Atlanta

The job also required us to fix several door and hardware concerns.  We brought in not only our team but also professionals that specialize in high-security locking systems.  In addition to the high-security locking systems that were installed on the doors we replaced, our windows also included laminated security glass that is more resistant to break-ins and greatly reduces the outside noise from the busy Ponce De Leon Avenue.

Stained-Glass

Window Replacement Atlanta

We were also able to partner with a local leaded glass repair company to reconstruct the stain glass windows in the sanctuary.  Challenges like this were what made this project so amazing.  Not only did we get to use our expertise, but we were able to see another world of window replacement that was so awe-inspiring.

While Atlanta architecture might not boast anything close to the cathedrals of Europe, if our relics are carefully preserved, centuries from now it very well might.  By doing our small part in the preservation of St. John Chrysostom Melkite Catholic Church the community, both the church members and the people who are lucky enough to pass by it during their daily routine, will be able to enjoy it for years to come.  There was a time when Rome had not celebrated its bicentennial yet.  With efforts like these, Atlanta will hold up a lot better!
