Spray Foam Insulation: a sealed ‘home envelope’

home insulationAnother smart approach to the hot-attic, cold-attic issue is Spray Foam Insulation.  Rather than being applied to the attic floor, a thinner, denser layer of attic insulation sticks to the underside of the roof. What that means is, the attic becomes part of the overall ‘home envelope’. It’s not longer stiflingly hot in the summer or bitter cold in the winter — two conditions that waste energy. Rather, the attic always has an even temperature, similar to the rooms below. Moreover, HVAC/duct systems located in attic won’t have to work as hard.

Spray Foam Insulation is also used to create airtight seals around vents, windows, and other small gaps that lead to heating and cooling inefficiency. Together, those gaps in a typical home can add up to the size of an open window or door! Homeowners who add Spray Foam Insulation report that there’s a noticeable difference in the year-round comfort of their home.

By also being sprayed under floors, inside walls, and along basement walls, this type of insulation gives your home a tight, 360° barrier against the elements. Since closed-cell foam is impermeable to water, crawlspace and basement insulation using Spray Foam can keep things dry and mildew-free. That’s important in locations with a lot of moisture and rainfall, like the Atlanta area. It can also add strength to the structure of your home!
