Sam walks into his boss’s office. ‘Sir, I’ll be straight with you, I know the economy isn’t great, but there are three companies after me, and I would like to respectfully ask for a raise.’ After a few minutes of haggling, the boss finally agrees to a 5% raise, and Sam happily gets up to leave.

‘By the way,’ asks the boss as Sam is getting up, ‘which three companies are after you?’ ‘The electric company, the water company, and the  phone company,’ Sam replied.

The Red Carpet Experience

At North Georgia Replacement Windows (NGRW), we understand that you can purhcase a window from a lot of places. Some are better than others, but there’s one thing that will always separate NGRW from other companies and that’s our ‘Red Carpet Experience.’

It starts from the initial call or visit to our showroom where you’re greeted by friendly, knowledgeable personnel who can guide you through the process of choosing the best windows, doors or insulation for your home. When you have one of our expert consultants in your home, you’ll immediately recognize that we are there to serve your best interest, and our no-hassle, no-gimmick, no-pressure approach to doing business will be truly appreciated.

The ‘Red Carpet Experience’ is also the way we treat your home. The actual red carpets are thick, rubber backed rugs used to protect the surfaces of the areas we are working around. They are safer to work on and provide superior protection. Our master carpenters wear booties and pay attention to the fine details of their craft, like using premium OSI sealants and even wiping your new windows down.

When we leave, we want your home to be more clean and beautiful than the condition we found it in. Plus, you’ll enjoy savings on your energy bills and maintenance for as long as you live in your home.

Employee Spotlight
Rebecca Scott
In April 2008, NGRW was growing fast and the owners were growing weary. After interviewing many job applicants, Ted called his mother to express the hardship of finding the perfect office administrator. At this time, Ted’s mom tells him of a smart young lady that she goes to church with that was looking for a job. Meet Rebecca Scott…

Rebecca is a graduate from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. (She’s our editor – a.k.a Grammar Queen.) Rebecca has one of the most competitive spirits, while at the same time being one of the most compassionate people you could ever meet. Along with being a die-hard Braves fan, Rebecca is very involved with her church and recently just came back from a mission trip to the Philippines.

Rebecca handles answering the phone calls, placing orders, posting on social media, and above all keeping the guys around the office in-line. We are truly blessed to have Rebecca as part of the NGRW team and anyone who has ever dealt with her understands why.

Energy Savings Tip

With the recent snow and ice, it’s hard to believe that Spring is just around the corner. However, before you know it, the temperatures will be warming up. Here are a few tips for how you can save energy this Spring:

1. Natural Ventilation – when temperatures are moderate and humidity is limited, you can cool/heat your home simply by opening a window or door.

2. Get Moving- with nicer temperatures, enjoy a walk or bike ride as opposed to driving your car. This will keep you healthy and reduce fuel consumption.

3. Don’t Heat Your Home With Appliances – On warmer days, avoid using the oven. Try a toaster oven or even grilling outside.

Once a captain on his ship was disturbed by his assistant telling him, “Sir! Sir! There are 5 enemy ships on the horizon.”

The captain tells the man,” Get my red coat and prepare for battle!”

The assistant runs without question to get the captains red coat and prepares for battle. After their victory, the assistant asks the captain why he wanted his red coat.

The captain tells the assistant “If I was shot you would not be able to tell I’m bleeding and you would keep fighting.”

The assistant thought this was a great idea. The next day the assistant came to the captain, “Sir! Sir! There are twenty enemy ships on the horizon!”

The captain was stunned. He looked at the assistant and told him “Get me my brown pants!”

Wears Valley Ranch

In 1991, Jim & Susan Wood, along with their three children, left their home in Sandy Springs, GA to fulfill a vision that they had been praying about for over twenty years. (We highly suggest clicking here to read how the vision all began. Tissues are recommended!) In the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, Wears Valley Ranch was birthed. Their goal is simple: ‘to promote the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social and physical development of children in need of a stronger family support system.’ Wears Valley Ranch accomplishes this goal by providing Christian homes, education, and counseling to children rescued from families in crisis. Their school, camps and retreats all reinforce this demonstration of Christ’s love and it’s their desire to ‘see every person inspired to follow Christ, healed from the past, and equipped to reach his or her full potential.’ To learn more of the incredible work being done at Wears Valley Ranch or find ways how you can get involved, visit their website at www.wvr.org.

How many times a day do you open and close your refrigerator? Depending upon your current model, a new Energy Star refrigerator can save you up to $150 a year.

Tip: One way to test your refrigerator seal is closing a dollar bill in the door. If the dollar bill drops when you close the door, you may want to consider getting the seal fixed or replacing your refrigerator altogether.

Pesto Pasta Salad
The Pioneer Woman
Ingredients:

  • 8 oz. Rotini (corkscrew) pasta
  • 1/3 c. prepared Pesto
  • 1/2 c. shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 c. mayonnaise
  • 1/2 c. sour cream
  • 1/2 c. milk (for thinning purposes)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 head Romaine lettuce
  • 1 c. grape tomatoes, halved
  • 1/2 c. black olives, halved
  • 4 oz. mozarella cheese, cubed
  • 4 tbs. pine nuts (optional)
  • Parmesan for sprinkling
Directions:
Cook the pasta in salted water according to package instructions. Then drain it & rinse in cold water. Allow pasta to dry slightly, then toss in a bowl with 4 tbs. pesto. (Add more if you want the pasta to be more coated.) Add Parmesan & toss. Cover& refrigerate pasta cold. Make the dressing by whisking together mayonnaise, sour cream, & milk with the rest of the pesto. Add salt & pepper, taste, & adjust seasonings as needed. The dressing needs to be somewhat thin & pourable in order to coat the lettuce & pasta later. Set the dressing aside. If using pine nuts, toast them over medium-low heat in a small skillet until they brown slightly. Set them aside. To assemble, make bed of lettuce in large bowl, then add generous layer of pesto-coated pasta. Add tomatoes, olives, and chunks of cheese. Spoon a good amount of dressing over the top; it should be thin enough to seep down into the salad, not so thick it will stay on top of everything. Sprinkle salad with pine nuts & a little extra Parmesan & serve!
The Funny Bone

A passenger in a taxi tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him something. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, then the driver said, ‘Please, don’t ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me.’ The passenger, who was also frightened, apologized and said he didn’t realize that a tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much, to which the driver replied, ‘I’m sorry, it’s really not your fault at all. Today is my first day driving a cab. I have been driving a hearse for the last 25 years.’

Rescuing addicts, regenerating men, and reconciling families. That’s the mission of No Longer Bound. Started by one of North Georgia Replacement Windows’ customers, Mike Harden, this 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization began in 1983. The ministry has grown a lot over the past 30 years and currently has two campuses, one in Cumming, GA and the other in Bremen, GA. Each year, over 80 lives are transformed from drug and alcohol addiction. Memorial Day is just around the corner and that means countless pools will be opening across the country. As much fun and entertainment that they provide, a pool is also a place to lose large amounts of energy- and thus money!

Tip: Invest in a pool pump timer. This will limit the number of hours your pool pump operates, letting you determine when and how long to leave it on. This simple addition can help save money and energy over the course of the summer!

Reese’s Peanut Butter Rice Krispe Treats
Ingredients:
– 6 cups Cocoa Krispies Cereal
16-18 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, diced
5 tbs. of butter or margarine
3 tbs. of light karo syrup
1 (10 oz) pkg. plus 2 heaping cups of mini marshmallows
1/3 cup of peanut butter
1/2 cup of chocolate chips

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine cereal and diced Reese’s. Set aside. Spray 9 x 13 pan & set aside. In large pot, melt butter over low heat. Add karo syrup & marshmallows & stir continuously until smooth. Remove from heat. Add cereal mixture into pot and fold together until cereal is evenly coated. (Peanut butter cups will fall apart as you fold so don’t overly mix.) Press into 9 x 13 pan and set aside. In microwave safe bowl, add peanut butter and heat for 30 seconds. In a separate microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips and melt at 30 second intervals, stirring in between intervals until smooth. When peanut butter is cool enough to handle, transfer into small zip lock baggie. Cut small corner off & drizzle back and forth over the rice krispie treats. Reapeat steps with chocolate. Either let treats sit at room temp. to cool or pop into the fridge for about 5 min. to speed up the process. Cut, serve & enjoy!

* Turn off your computer and monitor when they’re not in use & plug home electronics into power strips that can easily be turned on/off.
* Lighting makes up about 10 % of home energy costs. Save up to 75 % of that energy by replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). They also last longer, saving money on replacements.
* Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes

Changing from Double Hungs to Casements

It’s true; most people still replace their windows with the same style that is currently in their home. However, there are many more options available when it comes to replacement windows. A couple of years ago, I replaced all the double hung windows in my home with casement style windows. I also know of four other window business owners who did the same. 2nd Lt. Travis Scott, brother of NGRW employee Rebecca Scott, is a graduate of North Georgia College and State University. Lt. Scott recently completed the United States Army Ranger School. This 61-day combat leadership course, which is broken up into three phases, is considered to be the most physically demanding and mentally challenging leadership course offered by the Army. Currently stationed at Fort Benning, GA, Lt. Scott is scheduled to leave for Colorado this week for his next three-year assignment. We are grateful for Lt. Scott’s service and sacrifice to our country and wish him the best as he continues to defend our freedom. God bless!

Energy Savings Tip

You can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day from where you would normally set it. (If you have a heat pump, don’t do this without a programmable thermostat.) You can do this automatically by using a programmable thermostat and scheduling the times you turn on the heating or air conditioning. As a result, the equipment doesn’t operate as much when you are asleep or not at home.

The Social Sash

Welcome to The Social Sash, the first edition of North Georgia Replacement Windows’ quarterly newsletter. We’re excited to bring you up-to-date news within our company, industry and throughout the community.

Although some of you may already be familiar with NGRW, perhaps you don’t realize that we’re more than just a window company. We also offer products such as:

  • Doors (Fiberglass, Steel and Iron)
  • Sunrooms
  • No-Rot Shutters
  • Decorative Glass Overlays
  • Blown-in & Thermal Reflective Insulation
NGRW was founded in 2005 by owners Ted Kirk and Jonathan Collum in efforts to provide more options for homeowners looking to replace their windows.

‘I realized that, in order to accommodate each homeowner’s unique situation, I needed to offer an assortment of brands, styles, colors and sizes, all backed by friendly, no-pressure sales and service.’ –Ted Kirk

Since that time, our company has grown from its humble beginnings in Ted’s basement to its current location off Warsaw Rd. in Roswell, GA. Our showroom offers a wide selection of the various windows and complimentary products offered, and we look forward to working with you on your next home project!

Newsletter - Quarter 1

It’s true; most people still replace their windows with the same style that is currently in their home. However, there are many more options available when it comes to replacement windows. A couple of years ago, I replaced all the double hung windows in my home with casement style windows. I also know of four other window business owners who did the same.
